Understand Express Entry

Express Entry is IRCC's online system for managing applications under three federal economic programs: the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). You must first qualify for at least one of these underlying programs.

Eligible candidates who enter the pool receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and IRCC issues invitations to apply for permanent residence through regular rounds of invitations. Being in the pool, or having a particular CRS score, never guarantees an invitation.

At a glance
  • 3 federal programs share one pool: CEC, FSWP and FSTP
  • The CRS ranks every eligible candidate in the pool
  • No job offer points — removed from the CRS on 2025-03-25
  • A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points

The Three Federal Programs

Meeting a program's basic eligibility never guarantees an Invitation to Apply — the Comprehensive Ranking System still ranks candidates within the pool.

Canadian Experience Class

For skilled workers with qualifying paid Canadian work experience, generally at least 1 year within the 3 years before applying, gained while authorized under temporary resident status.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

For skilled workers with qualifying foreign work experience, approved language testing, and education requirements, assessed against a selection-factor grid.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

For workers qualified in an eligible skilled trade, generally requiring qualifying trade work experience, language testing, and either a job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification.

Before you start

Beyond your specific program, an Express Entry profile also depends on the following.

  • Approved language test: A completed, approved English or French test result, valid and within its window.
  • Educational credential assessment: Foreign education generally needs an ECA where the program requires it.
  • Proof of funds: Settlement funds where applicable to your specific program.
  • Admissibility: No factors that would affect your admissibility to Canada.
From Eligibility to Invitation

How the Express Entry journey works

Every profile is different, but the shape of the process generally looks like this.

  1. Confirm program eligibility

Confirm eligibility for at least one of CEC, FSWP or FSTP.

  2. Complete language testing and education steps

Finish an approved language test and, where applicable, an educational credential assessment.

  3. Create your Express Entry profile

Submit your profile to enter the pool.

  4. Receive your CRS score and enter the pool

Eligible candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System.

  5. If invited, submit your PR application

Candidates who receive an invitation to apply submit a full permanent residence application.

  6. IRCC assesses your application

IRCC reviews eligibility, admissibility and supporting evidence before a final decision.

Your profile

Do you have a spouse or common-law partner?

Important things to know

Does entering the Express Entry pool guarantee an invitation?

No. Pool entry does not guarantee an invitation to apply — candidates are ranked and invited based on the Comprehensive Ranking System, and invitation cutoffs vary by round.

Do I need a job offer for Express Entry?

Not for CRS points — job offer points were removed from the Comprehensive Ranking System effective March 25, 2025. A qualifying job offer may still matter for underlying program eligibility in some cases, such as the Federal Skilled Trades Program.

What counts toward my CRS score?

Core human capital factors (age, education, language, Canadian work experience), spouse or common-law partner factors where applicable, skill transferability combinations, and additional points such as a provincial nomination, Canadian education, French-language proficiency, or a qualifying sibling in Canada.

Can I live in Quebec through Express Entry?

Quebec selects its own economic immigrants through a separate process. The federal CEC, FSWP and FSTP programs generally require intending to live outside Quebec.

Is this CRS calculator the same as IRCC's official tool?

This calculator uses the same published official point tables, but it's an independent estimate for planning purposes — always confirm your actual profile and score in your own IRCC Express Entry account.
