Caregivers can apply for Canadian Permanent Residence
Those who have been working in Canada as caregivers for 2 years or more can be eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada. There are three streams under which eligible caregivers can apply depending on work performed.
Caring for children program (pilot)
This program is for childcare provider, Live-in caregiver and nanny under NOC4411. To be eligible under this program you must:
- Have worked as a home child care provider for at least 24 months full-time within the last 4 years when you apply.
- Have performed most of the main duties as described in NOC group 4411.
- Meet minimum level of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 in all four abilities of English or French
- Have minimum one-year post-secondary education (ECA required for education outside Canada)
Caring for People with High Medical Needs Program (pilot)
This program is for registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses (NOC 3012), licensed practical nurses (NOC 3233), nurse aides and patient service associates (NOC 3413), home support workers (NOC 4412). Housekeepers do not qualify for this program.
To be eligible under this program you must:
- Have worked in one of the above occupations for at least 24 months full-time within the last 4 years when you apply. You must be licensed to work under NOC 3012 and 3233
- Have performed most of the main duties as described in relevant NOC job descriptions
- Meet minimum level of CLB 7 in all four abilities of English or French if worked under NOC 3012
- Meet minimum level of CLB 5 in all four abilities of English or French if work experience is in NOC 3233, 3413 or 4412
- Have minimum one-year post-secondary education (ECA required for education outside Canada)
Live-In caregiver program
This program stopped accepting applications in November 2014; however, there are many caregivers in Canada under this program.
To be eligible under this program you must:
- Have 24 months of full-time live-in employment within the last 4 years OR 3900 hours of authorised full-time employment within a minimum of 22 months when you apply.
Quick facts
- Caring for children and caring for people with High medical needs pilot programs are going to end in November 2019.
- Foster parents do not qualify under ‘caring for children program’.
- You must have provided care for children under the age of 18 years to qualify under ‘caring for children program’.
- You do not need to live in your employer’s home to qualify under ‘caring for children program’.
- You must plant to live outside the province of Quebec.
- You can use your Quebec work experience to apply for permanent residence through one of the caregiver programs even if you plan to live in another province other than Quebec.
- You can include your family members in your PR application.v
- Your work experience as a caregiver must have been authorised by a work permit to be considered. You must not have worked in Canada illegally.

What documents are required while creating an Express Entry Profile?
You must meet the minimum eligibility requirement for at least one of the three categories of Express Entry program before you can create your online profile. Three programs are Federarl Skille worker, Federal Skilled Trade and Canadian Experience Class.
Certain documents are required while creating an Express Entry profile. However, you need to have some or all of the following documents to enter the information only; you don’t have to upload these documents while creating the profile.
- Passport or Travel Document
- Language test results
- Education Credential Assessment (ECA) to claim points for education outside Canada
- Provincial Nomination (If available)
- Valid job offer letter from a Canadian employer (If available)

Who can represent my case for immigration to Canada?
